Can you reuse charcoal? How to put it out, store it and relight it
Most people let their charcoal burn out after the food comes off. If you shut it down instead, what is left becomes the start of your next fire. With dense charcoal logs, that can be a lot.
CHARBLOX · November 6, 2026 · 4 min readYes, and dense charcoal reuses best
Charcoal that has been put out still has carbon left to burn. How useful it is next time depends on what it was to begin with:
- Dense logs (CHARBLOX, binchotan): keep their shape and relight well.
- Lump: partly reusable. Small pieces often crumble.
- Briquettes: tend to fall apart into ash.
“Once you are done cooking you can put the coals in an airtight container to extinguish and use again. I've been able to use the same charcoal 7×.”

How to put charcoal out
Fire needs air. Take the air away and it goes out.
- Grill with a lid and vents (kamado, kettle, smoker): close the lid and shut every vent. The fire suffocates and the logs stay in place for next time.
- Open grill, konro or robata: lift the logs with tongs into a lidded metal can and close the lid.
How to store it
- Wait until the charcoal is completely cold.
- Keep it dry. Charcoal soaks up moisture, and damp charcoal is hard to light.
- Tap off loose ash before you store it.
How to relight it
- Put the used logs at the bottom of the chimney.
- Add new logs on top.
- Light as usual with one natural firestarter. The used logs catch faster and light the new ones above them.

Make close-down part of the station checklist: choke the grill or move the bed to a lidded metal can at the end of service. What is left becomes the first load at the next prep, so count it when you work out your fuel cost.
