The Sawdust Ledger
Count the fire you didn’t have to feed.
CHARBLOX is pressed from sawdust left over at lumber mills, not from trees cut to make charcoal. Enter what you burn and the ledger shows the lump it replaces and the wood that never went into a kiln.

How the ledger counts
CHARBLOX lb/yr = amount × bag size × periods per year
Lump replaced = CHARBLOX × 3.5 (hardwood) or × 4.5 (bamboo)
Wood not kilned = lump replaced × 4 to 6
Weight not hauled = lump replaced − CHARBLOX
Lump replaced = CHARBLOX × 3.5 (hardwood) or × 4.5 (bamboo)
Wood not kilned = lump replaced × 4 to 6
Weight not hauled = lump replaced − CHARBLOX
- Lump replaced. One pound of CHARBLOX does the work of 3–5 lb of average charcoal: 3–4× for Classic Hardwood, 4–5× for Dragon Fire Bamboo. The headline uses the middle of each range, and the range sits underneath it.
- Wood not cut and kilned. Traditional earth and brick kilns turn roughly 15–25% of the wood’s dry weight into charcoal (FAO, Simple technologies for charcoal making). So each pound of lump stands for about 4–6 lb of wood. Modern retorts do better; many imports come from simpler kilns.
- Why sawdust matters. CHARBLOX starts as sawdust from lumber milling: wood already cut for something else. No tree is felled to make the log.
These are estimates for planning and storytelling, not a certified carbon or life-cycle figure. Real results depend on your station, how you run the fire, and where the lump you’re replacing came from. Read more in what charcoal really costs per hour and why it burns.
