Why it burns

Density is the whole idea.

Ordinary charcoal is a piece of wood with the water and volatiles cooked out — light, porous, quick to go. CHARBLOX starts as sawdust from whole-lumber milling, pressed under heat until it is far denser than any branch, then carbonized. Same carbon. Far more of it per cubic inch. That is where the hours come from.

Anatomy of a log

The shape is not decoration.

ACentral channel. Draws air through the log, so it ignites from inside and burns evenly instead of only from the surface.
BPressed body. The density is the burn time. Slower to catch, far slower to leave — 3–5× the burn of average charcoal per pound.
CSix faces. Logs nest into a tight bed with no gaps and no hot spots. Broken pieces burn the same — more surface, same density.
Hardwood

Flavor and the long hold.

Mixed hardwood sawdust gives the deep smoke you expect from a wood fire, with a steady mid-high plateau. Three to four times the burn of average charcoal. Built for the smoker, the kamado, the closed oven.

Bamboo

Heat in the binchotan register.

Bamboo carbonizes harder and cleaner: high radiant heat, almost no smoke, four to five times the burn of lump. It behaves like Japanese white charcoal at a fraction of the cost. For robata, konro, yakitori and the hard sear.

Cost-per-pound figures are typical US retail ranges as of 2026; CHARBLOX range reflects 5 lb to 20 lb retail pricing. Cost per service, not per pound, is the number that matters — see the load planner on the home page.

Service protocol

Run it like equipment.

Dense fuel lights differently. Give it the chimney and a few extra minutes; it pays you back for hours.

01 · LightChimney, one firestarter

Never fluid. Don't overcrowd the chimney — airflow is what gets dense logs going. Start before prep.

02 · WaitLet it grey over

Longer than lump. Wait until the top logs are ashed at the edges before you dump the chimney.

03 · BedNest the hex faces

Stack tight for an even bed. Set your temperature at the vents, then leave the bag alone.

04 · CloseChoke and keep

Shut the vents or move coals to an airtight can. What's left is the first load next time — count it in your fuel cost.

Pro tip from a purchaser: put partly-burned logs at the bottom of the chimney with new logs on top — the used ones catch faster and light the rest. Aiden · Costco · 46 found helpful

No tree is cut.

Every log began as sawdust from whole-lumber milling — a by-product that would otherwise be waste. We press it, carbonize it and ship it from Los Angeles. No chemicals, no binders, no accelerants, and nothing felled to make it.
